What is research? Research is a search for knowledge. It’s a journey through the unknown, into unfamiliar territory. It’s taking a risk and being unsure of the outcome. It’s not just pure facts—though it may include them—but doesn’t have to focus on them. It could be an original interpretation of the data—maybe even in a foreign language.
There are different types of research in the world, but regardless of type, it’s common for researchers to summarize their efforts by producing a document they call “Research” or “The Research.” That’s problematic because it creates confusion. Unfortunately, that confusion is exacerbated by the fact that authors of the various kinds of research sometimes choose to use the same word ‘research’ even though they’re talking about very different things.
